"In the 19th century Sunday School Teacher Edward
Kimball at Boston USA visited a young man to make
sure he was a Christian, and led to the Lord, Dwight L
Moody, who founded an evangelistic ministry by which
Wilbur Chapman was converted and became an
evangelist. He recruited to help him Billy Sunday who in
turn launched a nation wide evangelistic ministry that
started an organization in Charlotte, North Carolina,
which organized a 3 week campaign led by Mordecai
Ham at which a 16 yearold Billy Graham was converted
to become the most prominent evangelist of our time"
to which I added " through whom David Cotton became
a Christian and went on to found the Gospel Print
Mission that as a team of volunteers have printed and
dispatched millions of tracts in over 50 languages, and
God enabled Billy Graham to inspire so many other
people to evangelize
"
It should encourage us all that small though what we are able to do may be, the LORD can use it to make bigger things happen down the road.
At the same time mentioned in ENGAGE a missionary from the 1800's wrote "Some men will not plant a tree because it cannot attain it's proper size in their lifetime" meaning that the fruits of mission may take a long time to develop and we should not be too concerned if we see little happening now.
BIBLE YEAR 2011
CELEBRATING THE 400th ANNIVERSARY
of the first publication of the King James Authorised Version Bible in 1611
In February St Mary's Parish Church Saffron Walden was packed with several hundred Anglican people and a small number of heretics - Quaker, Baptist, Brethren, to hear a lecture by a Cambridge Don about The Impact of the King James Version of the Bible known as the AV, which for all it's archaic language little understood today in Britain, remains the most accurate to the original languages of Hebrew and Greek of all the 350 English versions of the Bible.
Interestingly too there have been over 1000 English translations of the New Testament or of particular books of the Bible. It's language style was old fashioned and out of date before it was even published and it was not popular at the time.
The public preference was the 1560 Geneva Bible, a truly Protestant Reformed Church Study Bible and widely used as a Family Bible by the 20-40 per cent of the population able to read.
The GB had chapters, verses, illustrations, maps, commentary, dictionary and notes. Some of the notes were critical of Roman Catholc and Anglican doctrine and clerical practice which led to it being officially banned by King and Archbishop.
Which of course only served to encourage it's wider use. The GB passed through 150 editions but was last printed in 1630. It took the AV over 100 years to replace it in popularity and the edition still in use is the 1769 4th Revision in which the punctuation was corrected.
We must never forget that The Roman Catholic Church in 1408 made it a heresy to translate the Bible into English and anyone doing so was subjected to the death penalty and burnt alive.
Only the Latin Bible was permitted But English people resent being ordered about by foriegners and rebelled against the Pope and papal laws, which were not of God, but of Satan. That immoral indecent unChristian law was revoked in 1604 in Protestant Britain. From the 2nd Vatican Council in the 20th century, the reformed Roman Cstholic Church also lifted the ban ..
